"It is easy to be mean. You don’t need human qualities for that. As soon as human value is lost, everything is in danger, everything collapses."

The 5th Annual (Free-of-Charge) Krešo's Camp: Five Days That Flew By In a Heartbeat

June 15-19, 2026, PAZIN - As has become a beloved tradition following the end of the school year, the Krešimir Ćosić Days Sports Association in partnership with KK Pazin, Pazinsport, the Vladimir Nazor Primary School Pazin, and Valamar Valresco, hosted its annual basketball camp for the youngest generation. Preschoolers and lower-grade primary school pupils took part.

The five days of the fifth anniversary Krešo Camp passed in the blink of an eye. Under the guidance of licensed coaches Damir, Luana, and Leon, the young players trained intensively while their parents were at work. They were assisted by junior demonstrators, Pazin's pre-cadet players Josip, Juraj, Ivan, Vito, Dominik, and Nino. Three courts kept everyone busy until the morning snack break, all focused on learning and developing the fundamentals of basketball.

With a remarkable level of concentration, the children listened to Krešo's life lessons from a work book written by his daughter Ana, president of the association — and watched a documentary about Krešo -  A Man Ahead of His Time.

Of course, the most eagerly anticipated moment was always the full-court game. The traditional crowd-pleaser, the pre-cadet match-up, reinforced this year by fearless young Luka, ignited a passionate atmosphere in the gym as the younger children cheered on their older teammates with full voice.

The camp's special guests were: Ivana Dojkić, one of Europe's finest basketball players, who arrived in true generous spirit and brought equipment for the older Pazin players; the legendary Nikola Plećaš "Saint Nick" a member of the golden 1970 Ljubljana generation, when a "basketball pandemic" first swept through this part of Europe; and the legendary Istrian national team player Mladen Mohorović. In conversation with the legends, the children asked questions ranging from the serious to the delightfully absurd.

Every participant deserves praise for their effort, conduct, and contribution to the camp. But a special mention goes to the preschoolers: Matej, who broke his arm two days before the camp but refused to miss it; Toma, in perpetual spinning motion yet somehow always within bounds; Tina, whose basketball instincts seem two years ahead of his age, much like the wiry Ivano; Marija, who had her difficult moments but honoured Krešo's principle of never giving up; Pero, who missed his sick brother Tobij but had his older sister Marija by his side; and Bruno, whose razor-sharp memory fires off all five of Krešo's basketball principles like a cannon.

Not one girl or boy complained of tiredness, and all expressed tremendous enthusiasm for the free camp, as did their parents. For the Krešimir Ćosić Days Association and Basketball Club Pazin, that is the only result that truly matters.

Book Launch: "The Smile" at the Croatian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The Croatian Embassy in Washington, D.C. hosted the launch of The Smile. An event that, by many accounts, was one of the most emotional the Embassy has seen in recent memory. Throughout the evening, guests recalled the life, work, and legacy of Krešimir Ćosić.

Interest exceeded the capacity of the hall. When word spread across Washington that the event was about Krešo, everyone wanted to come, the room would have been fuller still with more seats. Two speakers flew in from Utah especially for the occasion, while Toni Kukoč and his wife Renata traveled from Chicago.
Ambassador Pjer Šimunović, host and Croatian Ambassador to the United States, opened the evening: "Krešo means a great deal to us here. He is part of this building, and his life is like a lighthouse, by the magnitude and light it radiates, it serves as a guide for others."

Sydney L. Jones, who served in the administrations of Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Ford, and Bush, and a close personal friend of Krešimir Ćosić, spoke about the importance of integrity in the world of politics: "When I met Krešo, I recognized integrity immediately. When you work in politics long enough, you learn quickly who has it and who you can trust. Dear Croatians, we trusted Krešo, and because of him, doors opened for you while he was in America. And believe me, we are always skeptical at first. But not with Krešo."

Lidija Dokrin Grahovac, whose name alongside that of her husband Jure appears on one of the donor plaques at the Embassy entrance, among the diaspora members who helped fund the building's restoration and purchase, recalled: "Krešo brought us all together. He spoke to us as if he were coaching a game. He loved being a coach, and he carried that into everything he did for Croatia at the Embassy. Every instruction he gave was full of sporting symbolism and motivation. He won at everything he touched, from basketball to representing Croatia to the restoration of this very building. His spirit lives in every wall of this room."

Brian Santiago, Athletic Director at Brigham Young University, Krešimir Ćosić's university, the same university attended by his daughter Ana, author and editor of this book, spoke about how BYU keeps his memory alive every time they walk into the arena where his retired jersey hangs: "I want every one of our athletes to look up to him. He truly represented the very best a sportsman can be, especially today, when a contract figure matters more than wholehearted devotion to a club or a country. For as long as Brigham Young exists, he will never be forgotten. You cannot imagine what he means to us and to Utah."

Santiago then turned directly to Toni Kukoč, seated in the audience: "I remember 1985, when Krešo brought you, those young national team players, into his arena, the Marriott Center. And even though I'm a die-hard BYU fan, I found myself cheering for you in a building that to this day people say was made for him."
Toni Kukoč recalled the moment Krešo saw something in him: "He said to me, 'Do you want to be a player?' I started to answer, 'I think...' He cut me off immediately: 'No. You don't think. You listen.' I'm sorry he didn't stay with us longer. Everything in basketball would have been different. He was a coaching genius, a visionary. He saved Jugoplastika, put us in the national team, and opened the doors to the NBA. All we had to do was listen."

The World Bank Youth Summit 2026: Building Bridges Between Sport, Mental Health, and the Future of Work

June 10, 2026, Washington DC, World Bank building - Ana Ćosić Pajurin, President of the Krešimir Ćosić Association, participated as a panelist at the World Bank Youth Summit, one of the most prominent global forums dedicated to youth development, economic empowerment, and the challenges facing the next generation.

The panel, titled "Building Bridges: Youth, Mental Health & the Future of Work," was a side event of the 2026 World Bank Youth Summit, themed "Future Works: Designing Jobs for the Digital Age." Co-organized by the World Bank's Development Finance Vice Presidency (IDA) and the Youth Summit team, the event brought together World Bank Group staff and global Youth Summit delegates in the World Bank Atrium at 1818 H Street NW, Washington, D.C.

The panel was moderated by Noreyana Fernando, External Affairs Officer at the World Bank's Development Finance Vice Presidency, and featured three panelists: Ana Ćosić, Akihiko (Aki) Nishio, Vice President for Development Finance at the World Bank, who has overseen three historic IDA replenishments totaling over $270 billion for the world's low-income countries, and Jennifer Posa, former Chief Wellbeing Officer at the Central Intelligence Agency, previously Head of Employee Wellbeing at Johnson & Johnson, and a seventeen-year veteran of the Mayo Clinic. The conversation was anchored by an opening video, "Building Bridges: Croatia's Extraordinary IDA Journey," which set the context for Croatia's role in global development solidarity.

Ana's contribution to the discussion was rooted in the lived experience of the Krešimir Ćosić Association and its long-standing commitment to youth sport as a vehicle for character development, mental wellbeing, and community belonging. Drawing on the legacy of Krešimir Ćosić, basketball legend, academic, and Croatian diplomat, Ana spoke to the unique power of sport to teach young people lessons that no classroom alone can offer: how to lose with dignity, how to lead under pressure, how to find identity within a team. She also drew on her own experience as a basketball player at Brigham Young University in Utah, following in her father's footsteps, and reflected on the parallels between athletes striving for excellence and young people navigating a rapidly changing world of work.

The conversation on the panel reflected a growing global consensus: that mental health and professional readiness are not separate concerns, but deeply intertwined. Young people who struggle with purpose, belonging, or self-worth do not arrive at the workplace ready to contribute and no amount of technical training compensates for that absence. Structured sport, mentorship, and community engagement offer something different: they build the inner architecture that makes everything else possible.
For the Krešimir Ćosić Association, the invitation to the World Bank Youth Summit represented both a recognition of the work being done in Croatia and an opportunity to place that work in a broader international conversation. The Association's programs, including the annual Krešin Kamp, which this year welcomed nearly 90 children in Pazin, community outreach initiatives, and youth basketball development work are built on the conviction that sport is not a luxury add-on to youth development. It is foundational.
Ana's presence at the Summit also underscored the Association's growing role as a voice for the Croatian experience on the world stage. In a panel that brought together perspectives from development finance, intelligence and security, and grassroots sport. The message from Croatia was clear: the values that Krešimir Ćosić embodied throughout his life, discipline, intellectual curiosity, humility, and an unshakeable belief in human potential, are not merely personal virtues. They are a model for how we might approach the challenges of youth development everywhere.

The World Bank Youth Summit 2026 was a reminder that the most important investments a society can make are in its young people and that the tools for that investment are often simpler, and older, than we think.

THE SMILE: A Memoir

He stood 6'11". He declined the NBA. He translated the Book of Mormon under Communist surveillance. Then he helped rebuild his country from a diplomat's desk while quietly dying of cancer — and never stopped smiling.

Krešimir Ćosić was the most complete basketball player Europe ever produced. He was also something rarer: a man whose faith, intellect, and warmth outgrew every arena he entered. The Smile is the story of how he became that man — and what it cost him.

Assembled from his unfinished memoirs, recorded recollections, and the memories of those who loved him, this literary memoir traces an extraordinary arc: from a hollow-chested teenager on the Zadar waterfront, to All-American at BYU, to gold medalist in Moscow, to Deputy Ambassador of Croatia in Washington — all while practicing a faith that made him a dissident in his own country, and a legend everywhere else.

"In all the years I have known him, including the last year when he was personally suffering a great deal, I never saw him without a smile." Senator Orrin G. Hatch, United States Senate, 2018

What readers are saying

"A rare book — one that makes you feel you have lost someone you never had the chance to meet."

Alex Samuelson

"The basketball is extraordinary, but it is a microcosmos for a greater story. The man behind the game will stay with you long after the last page."

Tracy Dunn
